The art installation -"Silver Room" by the contemporary artist Tia Thuy Nguyen is now part of the prestigious contemporary art collection of Château La Coste, that is currently on display at the estate site in Aix-en-Provence, France.
In the world of fashion, people have known Thuy Nguyen as the founder of THUY DESIGN HOUSE, designs of which are heavily associated and inspired with traditional motifs of Vietnam. But little do people know, before becoming an iconic fashion designer she is now, Thuy Nguyen was a painter that went by Tia-Thuy Nguyen. “Art has brought me to the fruitful land for unlimited passion and creativity” - artist Tia-Thuy Nguyen has shared.

Due to her undiluted identity and unique artistic practice that interweaves her worldly experiences with her innate passion for the arts, Tia-Thuy Nguyen was able to fiercely push through the two years, 2016 - 2018, of putting together the following installation and bringing it all the way to Europe. With her ambitious artistic vision, she was able to open a pathway to the world of Vietnamese contemporary art in France.
The Silver Room is a grand cube that was built on top of two monoliths weighing more than 2 tons each, covered in silver foil.
The gap between the two large slabs of the silver block allows sunlight to enter the interior room.
“Assembling a roof of such stature is an art in itself. Such knowledge gets passed down through generations. Rain, snow and storm are no opponent to the power of the human mind: its wisdom and experience of cultivated and vigorous tradition. For those who have not witnessed this first hand, this must be hard to imagine”- Tia shared the challenges of her creating the Silver Room.
The architecture of Rong house is inspired by stilt houses in the North Central Highlands, Vietnam.
The Rong house is built from old red and bamboo bamboo, designed in harmony with the natural landscape.
The number of steps leading up to the Rong house is numbered according to the Sinh-Lão-Bệnh-Tử (Birth-Aging-Illness-Death) cycle in Buddhism, ending at Sinh (Birth) to bring luck to the visitors.
The architecture stands tall on its own but simultaneously seems to sink into the landscape of Aix-en-Provence, making it not only a large sculpture, but also a site-specific installation. The gap between the bamboo and wood columns create patterns with light and shadow, making the artwork constantly change with time and weather, never repeating itself.

The more paths Tia has travelled and boundaries she has crossed, the more profound her devotion of her identity and tradition has become. That connection is the invisible thread that ties her to her homeland, despite geographical obstacles. To her, art has never been a destination, but instead a journey that brings a part of Vietnamese culture and soul to the rest of the world. The ‘Silver Room,’ with its multi-layered-and-faceted means of interaction, incorporates a large variety of art forms, that are closely interconnected with one another to create a space, filled with colours, light and shadow; textures and visual effects.

Tác phẩm “Silver Room” của nghệ sĩ Tia Thủy Nguyễn thuộc bộ sưu tập nghệ thuật đương đại uy tín của Château La Coste, hiện đang được trưng bày trong khuôn viên điền trang tại Aix-en-Provence, Pháp.
Trong thời trang, mọi người đã được biết đến NTK Thủy Nguyễn với thương hiệu THUY DESIGN HOUSE gắn liền với các thiết kế mang đậm dấu ấn truyền thống của Việt Nam. Nhưng trước khi là một nhà thiết kế thời trang, Thủy Nguyễn còn là một họa sĩ, một nghệ sĩ với tên gọi Tia Thủy Nguyễn. “Nghệ thuật đã đưa tôi đến miền đất màu mỡ cho niềm đam mê và sáng tạo không giới hạn.” nghệ sĩ Tia-Thủy Nguyễn chia sẻ.

Chính đam mê đó đã khiến nghệ sĩ Tia miệt mài lao động trong suốt 2 năm, từ 2016 đến 2018, vượt mọi khó khăn về không gian, thời gian và địa lý để mang tác phẩm sắp đặt “Silver Room” (tạm dịch là ‘Nhà Bạc’) đến tận vùng đồi núi Aix-en-Provence của nước Pháp xa xôi. Với tác phẩm đầy tham vọng này, Tia đã mở thêm một cánh cửa để phương Tây bước vào thế giới nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam, dạo chơi ở ranh giới giữa sử thi, kiến trúc Tây Nguyên, các nghi lễ Phật giáo, các thực hành thủ công của mỹ thuật Việt Nam.
Khối bạc của tác phẩm “Silver Room” được làm từ 2 phiến đá nguyên khối lớn, bên ngoài phủ lớp quỳ bạc sáng lấp lánh.
“Dựng mái nhà đúng là một nghệ thuật siêu đẳng, được lưu truyền qua nhiều thế hệ. Mọi mưa gió, bão bùng trên tầng cao đều không quật được sức người, trí tuệ và kinh nghiệm đắc tâm cổ truyền. Những ai chưa chứng kiến, chưa bắt tay làm thì thật khó tưởng tượng” – Tia chia sẻ về một trong những thách thức khi thực hiện tác phẩm.
Kiến trúc của nhà Rông được lấy cảm hứng từ những ngôi nhà sàn phía Bắc Tây Nguyên, Việt Nam.
Nhà Rông được xây từ gỗ sến đỏ và tre già, thiết kế hòa quyện vào cảnh quang thiên nhiên.
Kiến trúc này đứng sừng sững nhưng dường như chìm vào cảnh quang rừng núi của Aix-en-Provence, khiến tác phẩm không chỉ dừng lại ở một điêu khắc cỡ lớn, mà còn là một sắp đặt mang tính đặc thù địa điểm. Kẽ hở giữa các thanh tre, gỗ tạo nên những họa tiết bằng ánh sáng và bóng đổ, khiến tác phẩm tự thân nó không ngừng biến đổi theo thời gian và thời tiết, không bao giờ tự lặp lại chính mình.

Càng bôn ba nhiều nơi và vượt qua nhiều đường biên, Tia Thủy Nguyễn càng thấm thía hơn sự thiêng liêng của bản sắc và truyền thống. Đó là sợi dây vô hình kết nối cô với mảnh đất quê hương, bất chấp mọi ranh giới địa lý. Đối với cô, nghệ thuật chưa bao giờ là một đích đến, mà là một hành trình mang một phần văn hóa và tâm hồn của người Việt Nam ra thế giới. “Silver Room” với sự tương tác đa kỹ thuật, lồng ghép nhiều loại hình nghệ thuật, kết nối chặt chẽ với nhau về tạo hình, không gian, màu sắc, ánh sáng, vật liệu, mang lại hiệu ứng thị giác – tâm linh độc đáo.
